Vela, its X-ray nebula, and the polarization of pulsar radiation

چکیده
The recent identification of the perpendicular mode of radio polarization as the primary one in the Vela pulsar by Lai et al. (2001) is interpreted in terms of the maser mechanism proposed by Luo & Melrose (1995). We suggest that such a mechanism may also be operative for the parallel mode which opens up the possibility of accounting for all types of polarization observed in pulsars. We propose an alternative interpretation of the arcs in the nebular X-radiation observed by Pavlov et al. (2000) and Helfand et al. (2001) with the Chandra Observatory, and interpreted by the latter as an equatorial wind. We interpret the arcs as traces of the particle beams from the two magnetic poles at the shock front. We also propose that the alignment with the rotation axis of the jet-like feature bisecting the arcs is an effect of projection on the sky plane and that there is no physical jet along the

The Vela Pulsar and Its Synchrotron Nebula: Aftermath of a Glitch
We present high-resolution Chandra X-ray observations of PSR B0833-45, the 89 ms pulsar associated with the Vela supernova remnant. We have acquired two observations of the pulsar separated by one month to search for morphological changes in the pulsar and its environment following an extreme glitch in its rotation frequency. We find a well-resolved nebula with a morphology remarkably similar t...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observations of Psr B1823–13: an Asymmetric Synchrotron Nebula around a Vela-like Pulsar
We present a deep observation with the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission of PSR B1823–13, a young pulsar with similar properties to the Vela pulsar. We detect two components to the X-ray emission associated with PSR B1823–13: an elongated core of extent 30 immediately surrounding the pulsar, embedded in a fainter, diffuse component of emission 5 in extent, seen only on the southern side of the pulsar....

Observations of the Vela pulsar region with the Chandra X-ray observatory have revealed the fine structure of its synchrotron pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), which showed an overall similarity with the Crab PWN. However, contrary to the Crab, no firm detection of the Vela PWN in optical has been reported yet. To search for the optical counterpart of the X-ray PWN, we analyzed deep optical observation...
متن کاملThe Vela Pulsar’s Radio Nebula
We have discovered that the radio nebula surrounding the Vela pulsar covers a much wider extent than previously reported, with two lobes to the North and South of the pulsar. Indications of this object have been reported previously, but its symmetric morphology around the pulsar and other details had not been identified as they were hidden due to poor sensitivity to low spatial frequencies. The...
متن کاملThe Vela Pulsar Wind Nebula at 6cm
Observations using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at a wavelength of 6 cm have uncovered the radio counterpart to the compact X-ray nebula surrounding the Vela pulsar. Two lobes were found oriented about the spin axis of the pulsar, starting at the edge of X-ray emission, they extend to three times the size. The northern lobe has a bright, defined edge and an integrated flux of 0.14 Jy, ...
